A truly global competition dedicated to science, technology and education

World Robot Olympiad™ (WRO) is an event incorporating science, technology,  education and robotics which brings together young people from all over the world to develop their creativity and problem-solving skills through challenging and educational robotics competitions. Teams can compete in any provincial competition to be eligible for the National Final. All competing teams are ranked nationally, and from this ranking list, the top 10 to 15 teams are invited to attend and compete in the National event in Gauteng. Teams winning their category stand a chance to be invited to represent South Africa at the WRO international event.

At WRO we offer challenging competitions for everyone in the age from 6 – 25. We have four competition categories, with their own characteristics and challenges:
  • Robo Mission
  • Future Innovators
  • Robo Sports
  • Future Engineers
Each season the challenges and theme for the WRO Season are developed with the country that hosts the International Final.

Event runs from August - April
Tomorrow’s innovators practice imaginative thinking and teamwork.

Guided by adult Coaches, FIRST LEGO League teams research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc., and are challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build, program a robot using LEGO® Education technology, then compete on a table-top playing field.

It all adds up to tons of fun while they learn to apply science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (STEM), plus a big dose of imagination, to solve a problem. Along their discovery journey, they develop critical thinking and team-building skills, basic STEM applications, and even presentation skills, as they must present their solutions with a dash of creativity to judges. They also practice the Program’s signature Core Values.

By the Numbers

255,000 PARTICIPANTS
32,000 TEAMS
32,000 ROBOTS
1,464 EVENTS
88 COUNTRIES

Impact

Proven, verifiable impact!
The positive impact FIRST LEGO League has on participants is gratifying and well documented. Over 88% are more interested in doing well in school, and 87% have more interest in attending college.
FIRST LEGO League teams get to:
  • Research challenges facing today’s scientists
  • Design, build, test and program robots using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology
  • Apply real-world math and science concepts
  • Learn critical thinking, team-building, and presentation skills
  • Participate in tournaments and celebrations
  • Understand and practice Gracious Professionalism®

Interschool Robotics League

Purpose
The ISRL aims to provide children with opportunities to collaborate with students from other schools, to creatively solve problems and overcome challenges, and to communicate effectively with others and build relationships through the use of robotics.

What We Offer

The ISRL is currently based in Gauteng, with plans to expand into the other provinces during 2022. The League hosts several events during the course of the year. Students use the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3s or SPIKE Primes to complete a set of challenges.
